A critical task for system operators is the precise identification of the root causes underlying an error situation. This identification is fundamental in deciding optimal maintenance actions, such as replacing a component versus calibrating it. However, the actual causes of an error are often neither measured nor unique.

Onboarding developers is a difficult task that many companies are faced with every day. One solution would be to have developers read the documentation for the codebase, but documentation can be incomplete and even incorrect. An alternative would be using tools for program comprehension to understand the codebase, with hybrid program analysis being one of the possible ways to infer information from the program and its code.

Software rejuvenation, also known as software restructuring or legacy removal, plays a critical role in preserving and enhancing the value of software assets within organizations. However, rejuvenation work can be difficult and tedious, and the benefit is not always clear. Therefore many individuals and organizations are reluctant to perform it.

Technical diversity of a complex system can be reduced using modularity and interface management. At the multi-disciplinary system level, this can be modelled using MBSE (Model-Based System Engineering) where typically the focus is on the system structure with the components and their interfaces. At the mono-disciplinary level this is further refined where each discipline uses its own tools and techniques to include more behavioural aspects.

During systems design, systems engineers would like to reason about systems feasibility as early in the process as possible. In this chapter, we present a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) method to support design decisions early in the process of systems development by quantitative information about important system qualities.

This technical report describes the learnings and the state of the Canvas project at the end of 2023, a collaboration between Canon Production Printing (CPP) and TNO-ESI. The topic addressed in this project is systems architecting for environmental sustainability (carbon footprint in particular) and circularity (ES&C in short).
